Photo Technique #5 - Capturing People
Published Date: April 16th, 2007Category: How To, Photo Techniques
Here are a few helpful hints when photographing people. This can also apply to many other photographic subjects such as jewelry, animals, still-life.
1. Be aware of your lighting. Is the sun really bright? Be careful or your subject will be dark if the sun is behind them. Use an outdoor film with a slower film speed such as 200. Is it dark or hazy outside? Try creating your own contrast with lights or play around with your shutter speed and aperature. This can give you some neat effects.
2. Get closer to your subject than you think you should. This is great when photographing people, especially children. Crop in as much as you can. If you test this out and take a few shots close up and a few far away, you will definitely notice the positive outcome. Try not to get extra “stuff” in your picture. It distracts from what you really are trying to capture in your image.
3. When photographing jewelry items, be aware of your lighting, angles, and reflections. Some items reflect A LOT including light and yourself! You may find after uploading a picture to your computer, you are actually IN the jewelry. This is a tricky thing to avoid. Try using a sheet to block some of yourself out of the reflection. This takes some practice and experimenting.
